Happy Happy English program in Singapore has run for 2 years

The Happy Happy English program that Goducate has been running in dormitories for foreign workers in Singapore has been running for 2 years already. It’s a program to teach the workers functional English. It’s also intended to extend a hand of friendship to these people whose lives here consist largely of extremely long hours of work. Very often the students are just arriving back from work when our classes, held on Saturday nights, are ending at 10 pm.

The program has been running in three dormitories since last year, and in a fourth starting this year. Last week, students in the first three dormitories who had attended at least 60% of the classes this year received their certificates of attendance. This end-of-year event was an informal one held in the various dormitories, with fun and games, chat, and food.

The volunteers have been privileged to be accepted as friends with whom the workers are willing to share their ups and down. Sadly, they have more downs than ups, and one of the worst situations they face is sudden termination of their work projects, and hence their jobs, within months of their arrival, long before they have earned enough to pay for the fees they paid their agents to get a job here.

Goducate hopes that the Happy Happy English program will at least give these workers the idea that there are people here who are prepared to be their friends, and we are thankful that modern technology enables us to keep in touch with them even after they return home.

Happy Happy English students appreciate friendship with Goducate volunteers

One aim of Goducate’s Happy Happy English program in Singapore is to teach foreign workers functional English. An equally important aim is to offer some friendship to these workers, who have had to leave family and friends to work long hours here and to live in huge dormitories that are generally located in extremely remote parts of Singapore. Thus, apart from classroom work, the Goducate volunteers in the Happy Happy English program also organise outings for the students.

On April 26 Tamil Murasu, Singapore’s Tamil newspaper, carried a feature on Goducate. When the reporters heard that an outing was being organized for students on May Day, they turned up to cover the event, which was a morning at one of the parks for some games and a picnic lunch.

Comments from two of the students were included the report published on May 2. R Silambarasan, who has been working in Singapore for 8 months said, “Singaporeans are kind-hearted to organise this game event. Even though we miss many English classes, they continue to encourage and motivate us. They sacrifice their time for us and we really appreciate them. Even though we have left home, we feel the volunteers are there for us”.

Another comment came from Franklin Bosco, who was being retrenched and sent back to India that night because the company he was working for had been taken over by another. He said, “For the past 3 years, I have worked in Singapore and am leaving today for my homeland. I am very happy and I can never forget this event. This is the best May Day I have spent in Singapore. The volunteers have made us feel strong and brave. Even after I have left Singapore, I will continue to keep in touch with them through Facebook”.

Goducate helps food blogger spread happiness to migrant workers through food

Singaporean general practitioner Dr Leslie Tay, well known for his ieatishootipost blog, had been wanting to express his gratitude to the thousands of migrant workers who help build up the country, and naturally he did it through food. He organised a meal for 500 workers living in one of the 50 or so dormitories in Singapore.

Partnering him in his Happy Go Round party held on Jan 10 was the Singapore Kindness Movement. The dormitory chosen, which houses about 8000 workers, was one of those at which Goducate conducts its Happy Happy English program, so Goducate helped out with the entertainment, and 50 of the places were given to students in the program. The food was supplied by ezb (BBQ made easy). Many other organizations (M1, Gardenia, Pearlie White, Phoon Huat, Recruit Plus) contributed items needed for the meal as well as for the goody bags and prizes for the games and lucky draws. The management of the dormitory did a marvellous job in setting up the facilities and in ensuring the whole event went smoothly.

The evening ended with registration for the next term of Happy Happy English at this dormitory, which starts on Jan 24.
