Indonesians enjoy Goducate’s E-Talk program

Teaching English is one of the programs that Goducate runs in Indonesia, where students learn the language in school, but have little practice in oral English and are thus not confident in speaking the language. For children, Goducate uses Sing Your English, teaching the language largely through song. For adults, Goducate started an informal English conversational program in Medan called English Corner, during which students were encouraged to chat freely.

In 2014, we changed the name of the program to E-Talk. As with the English Corner, the aim is to make learning English enjoyable and effective, but activities have been introduced. In E-Talk, English is learnt through singing, playing games, watching movies, acting, cooking, and taking part in activities such as arts, crafts, and sports. It is a flexible program that can be modified to suit type of student. We have used it to teach various groups of learners, such as people in orphanages, schools, businesses and other organizations. The motto is: more mistakes, more learning, more fun!

Another feature of E-Talk is a segment called “Life Talk”. Here time is allotted for facilitators to talk to the students on a personal level, to get to know and understand them better. “E-Talk, especially Life Talk, makes me feel like I am not in a class but there is a sense of being part of a family when we are divided into small groups and talk about life. I am always looking forward every week to attend the sessions because I can freely express what I want to say in Life Talk. The facilitator is not really like a teacher but a brother to all of us. E-Talk is not an English course but a family, a community,” says Miss Desi Naibaho,a marketing manager for a Sushi Restaurant.

Yet another comment came from Dr. Vince Ratnawati, a professor at the University of Riau. He said, “The teaching method is different from all the English courses I have attended. It is a fun-filled method that I even applied with my university students. At the end of each session, I expect our team, Blue Team, to win and have candies from our facilitator, hahaha! I realized, competition is a fun approach in learning.”

E-Talk is being enjoyed in Batam, Pekanbaru, Jakarta, Bandung, and Medan and we hope to expand. “The sessions are unique and fun,” says Mr. Kun Lun, a banker, “I even encourage my subordinates to join.”

Goducate Moringa Center in Bandung, Indonesia, starts product processing work

Earlier this year, Goducate launched GMorE (Goducate Moringa Explosion) initiatives to train and assist needy Indonesians in the production, processing, and utilization of Moringa oleifera, a plant with many nutrients. One plan is to partner with farming and business entities in different towns to produce Moringa in land areas of two to five hectares. Goducate’s part is to provide technical assistance and to train the local community.

About a week ago the processing of Moringa by a local partner started in Bandung. Apart from Moringa powder, the other processed products include Moringa coffee, Moringa tea, Moringa leaf extract, and probiotics for foliar spray. This center has a unique set up in that the Moringa trees are intercropped with strawberry and peanuts as cash crop.

To encourage people to use processed Moringa products, we conducted a 3-hour hands-on training on Moringa processing. The highlight of the session was a demonstration on cooking of native chicken with Moringa leaves, ginger, lemon grass, and young chili leaves.

After learning about the nutritional and health benefits of Moringa powder, many of the participants also purchased the Moringa capsules produced by our local partner.

Youths take charge of moringa awareness project in Iloilo

The Goducate Training Center (GTC) has been encouraging its neighboring communities to plant and eat moringa, and as part of its health feeding program it has been distributing moringa powder to malnourished children. At first the powder was made only at GTC, but as our community work increased, we have taught the communities to make the powder themselves.

Last November, GTC held its first Community Youth Leadership Seminar. 33 high-school and college students from 5 barangays attended this event, the aim of which was to expose them to our existing community work, such as vermicomposting, moringa awareness, and pig rearing.

After that seminar, one of the youths, Julius, a radiography student, taught the benefits of moringa and how to make moringa powder in one barangay (the smallest administrative division) as part of his school’s community outreach every Saturday.

Julius is also the president of 4H (health, heart, hand, and head) club in San Miguel municipality. 4H is a national youth organization for people aged 15-35, the aim of which is to encourage members to learn, grow and work together for positive change.

There are about 15 members in Barangay Sto Angel, where Julius lives. GTC encouraged Julius’ 4H group in Sto Angel to make moringa powder. They buy fresh moringa leaves from their own community. A few weeks ago they brought their first batch of 0.75 kg of moringa powder (from about 10 kg) of fresh leaves) for sale to GTC. The group has taken over from us the moringa awareness/information drive in their barangay and other barangays as well.

Julius’ father is the captain (chief) of BrgySto Angel. He wants every household to plant moringa and hopes that Sto Angel will be the center of moringa in San Miguel, if not the whole of the Philippines. The 4H group has started to plant moringa in the community and will be using vermicompost as fertilizer. We are keen to see how the captain’s dream will be realized.
