Goducate benefits from MHC Medical Centre’s (Amara) Open Day

MHC Asia, a finalist at this year’s British Chamber of Commerce’s (Singapore) 12th Annual Business Awards in the Exceptional CSR Practice category, is one of Goducate’s loyal corporate sponsors. Not only does MHC Asia (www.mhcasia.com) contribute generously to Goducate, it loses no opportunity to create awareness of and to gather support from others for Goducate.

At the Open Day of the new premises of the MHC Medical Centre (Amara), guests were encouraged to contribute to Goducate rather than to send flowers. Another form of contribution was for postcards that carried pictures of children at the Goducate children’s home in Cambodia. Guests who contributed in this way were asked to write a message to the child or children whose picture was on the postcard they chose.

The MHC Medical Centre (Amara) is a centre for GP consultations as well as a one-stop health-screening centre for pre-employment checks and executive health screening.

Goducate is grateful to be the beneficiary of MHC Asia’s CSR (corporate social responsibility). Among other things, the company has sponsored office space for Goducate headquarters, several vans for various Goducate projects, the lease of a Goducate center in Batam, land for the Goducate model farm in Laguna, and literacy centres in Sabah.

Goducate model farm flattened by typhoon Nesat

When typhoon Nesat (known locally as typhoon Pedring) swept across The Philippines last week, it brought floods to many parts of the country. However, in Laguna province, the main damage was wrought by the wind.

The strength of the wind was of storm signal 2 (the system has 4 signals, with signal 1 being the weakest typhoon). Storm signal 2 means that winds of 60-100 kph can be expected in the next 24 h.

We had time to harvest all crops ready for eating or for sale before the storm brought down trees near the perimeter of the farm as well as our string beans, tomatoes, corn, and bell peppers. Some 60% of the farm was affected.

We have since been uprooting all the damaged plants.

Goducate at ActivAid 2011

Goducate was represented again at this year’s ActivAid conference organized jointly by the NUS (National University of Singapore) Medical Society and Health Expeditions International.

The theme of this year’s conference was Creating Real Impact. As such, apart from speeches and workshops, a session was allocated to a case-study, to discuss the impact made by a student project and how further impact could be achieved. The student project was that being done in a refugee community at the Thai-Cambodian border and aimed at tackling faeco-oral and waterborne diseases, high maternal and infant mortality, malnutrition, and prevention of chronic diseases. The students had been visiting the village annually for 3 years conducting medical clinics, screening the refugees for malnutrition, and distributing water purification and deworming tablets, feminine wash to females, and milk powder to children. For the case-study they had to assess achievements to date, discuss the challenges to be faced, find solutions for these challenges, and make plans for achieving future goals.
