Volunteers raise funds for Goducate

Over a hundred volunteers raised funds for Goducate at the Christmas Fiesta on the eve of Christmas and Christmas day. The Christmas Fiesta was held in conjunction with a Christmas Musical held at a local Singapore school. The organizers of the musical had generously decided that the proceedings of the fiesta would go to help Goducate.

The volunteers set up booths in the school canteen to sell food, clothes (used and new), health-products and play games. About 20 booths were set up by the volunteers. Many of the volunteers were doing such work for the first time. The youngest volunteer was a ten year old boy who was determined to help Goducate with his simple “pick up marbles in a bowl with a chopstick” game. Though he raised only a few dollars for Goducate, it was a joy just to see his spirit of volunteerism!

As the audience spilled out of the school auditorium at the end of the musical and entered the canteen, they were greeted with many zealous (and sometimes over-zealous) sales-people from the various booths hawking their products. It was a quite amazing to see the zeal of these volunteers – to see normally quiet house-wives become enthusiastic sales-ladies selling some home-baked cookies, to see big bosses of big corporations sell Goducate stickers, and to see so many people just empty their pockets to “help poor Asians help themselves.”

The booth that raised the largest amount of funds was the Goducate booth. Car owners were encouraged to buy Goducate car-stickers, so that they could advertise the Goducate name as they drove. Office workers were encouraged to buy a photo-frame with a Goducate picture of a child to place on their office desks, so that they could advertise the Goducate brand. They were also encouraged to buy Goducate post-it pads. Many also bought Goducate post-cards to send to their friends or to stick on their office notice boards.

The booths raised almost US$4,900.00 for Goducate. This amount was sufficient to pay for the recent renovation of our Goducate coordinating office and for almost all the start up costs of Goducate. But much more important than the funds raised, was the spirit of volunteerism generated that night. As a non-profit organization that runs on a shoe-string budget Goducate will need a strong core-group of passionate volunteers. The passion of the Christmas Fiesta volunteers was a great encouragement to us.

Also, more important than the funds raised from selling Goducate merchandise is the fact that hundreds of cars, offices and homes will be advertising the Goducate name! For a brand-new organization like Goducate, visibility is very important.

To us at Goducate, we consider these dear people who bought and display these Goducate products as more than mere customers – they are valued Goducate volunteers!

It’s branding time!

Christmas is the time when people tend to buy gifts for others and themselves. Goducate has produced a range of Goducate products just in time for this season. The primary purpose of these products is to help publicize the Goducate name and make it a well-known “brand.” It is our dream to make Goducate the first name that comes to mind when people think of “helping poor Asians help themselves.”

It is our dream to make Goducate the first name that comes to mind when people think of “going to educate people, so that they can help themselves.” Hopefully, the word “goducate” will become a verb for the act of “going out to educate”! It will be so nice to hear people say “Let’s goducate these poor kids!”

It is also our dream to make Goducate the first name that comes to peoples’ minds when they think of “making help connect between the helper and the helpless.”

All these are just dreams now! BIG dreams!! But unless we think BIG, how can we be a blessing to Asia – where half the world’s population lives? Where there is a desperate need for many to get a decent chance to be educated – in literacy, in computer skills, in livelihood skills and, most importantly, in life itself!

Big dreams can only become a reality when we take steps – starting with little steps, like producing Goducate postcards, photo-frames, car-decals and post-it pads.

Big dreams can only become a reality when you help us to send these little postcards to your friends, place a photo-frame with a picture of a little Cambodian orphan on your office desk or in your living room, stick a Goducate decal on your car or stick little Goducate post-it notes on your office bulletin board.

Let’s join together and begin this long journey to help the helpless by taking these little steps!

Blessed Christmas and New Year!!

Goducate coordinating center

The Goducate Coordinating Center is finally ready! A shoe-string budget was given to the design team and they managed to keep well within budget. The all-volunteer Goducate design and decoration team, led by Alina (an architectural designer who works in one of Singapore’s finest architectural firms) was given less than a week to finish their job and they did a day ahead of schedule!

Since there is a possibility of us having to move to a new center next year, one of the specifications set for the design team was that most of the furniture and fixtures should be removable. They surpassed this target – only about 5% of total costs will not be removable to the new center.

The Goducate Board decided that the center should look like a command-center, ie, like the operations-room in an army at war. After all, Goducate is in a fierce battle against poverty and hopelessness. Alina also suggested that it should have a bare, rugged look to reflect Goducate’s operating environment and style. She also suggested that Goducate’s projects should also be high-lighted in montages so that visitors will have a better idea of the many and varied projects that it does.

During the few days of furious activity – most of which were done after office-hours and on the weekend because all the interior decoration team were Goducate volunteers – there was a great spirit of unity and fun. These high-energy and high-powered young professionals are the forerunners of what we hope will be a huge army of Goducate volunteers.

The final result was “awesome” (I heard this comment from several visitors) and has been an inspiration to all of us who work in the office and those who have since visited the office.

Our thanks to Alina and the Goducate decoration team!

Come visit us!
