Goducate musicians from Philippines and singers from Indonesia perform in Singapore

A team of Goducate musicians from the Philippines, and a team of children from Indonesia trained in Goducate’s Sing Your English (SYE) program were in Singapore to perform at MHC Asia Group Pte Ltd’s 25th anniversary dinner on Oct 7.

The trip to Singapore was an opportunity that the children might otherwise never have to travel out of their country. Through the generosity of Dr Low Lee Yong, founder and CEO of MHC, the children also had a few days enjoying Singapore’s attractions.

The music program in Laguna, Philippines, began as a means of attracting out-of-school youth back into education by offering lessons on playing the recorder. It has grown into successful program, with children learning how to play a whole range of instruments. Not only has the team been invited to play at various events, but many individuals have obtained university scholarships based on their musical ability, and two are now university students majoring in music.

The SYE program is a popular program in Indonesia for giving children the confidence to speak English. Although students learn English in school, most do not use the language out of class, but learning the language through song somehow gets them singing English sentences wherever they happen to be.

For its 25th anniversary, MHC also donated a total of Sing$1 million to several organizations. Goducate, which received Sing$300,000, was the largest recipient.

Goducate sponsor in Singapore visits Goducate Laguna

MHC Asia is a big Goducate sponsor. In mid-May 13 people from MHC in Singapore visited Goducate Laguna to see some of the work being done there.

At Tagumpay village they saw Goducate’s Health Information Drive being conducted, as well as Goducate’s music program. In Bay, they visited the prison to see Goducate’s Restoration Program. And later they visited the Goducate Farm, where they enjoyed learning about vermiculture and the growing of organic vegetables.

In the evening we prepared a simple program for the guests at the Goducate Training Center in Puy-puy. The children from the music program and the Goducate scholars were invited, about 50 in all. They rendered a song.  And Dr Low Lee Yong, Chief Executive Officer of MHC Asia, gave an inspirational talk on the importance of education.  Dr. Low also surprised the 35 children from the music program with a gift of school supplies.

Goducate benefits from MHC Medical Centre’s (Amara) Open Day

MHC Asia, a finalist at this year’s British Chamber of Commerce’s (Singapore) 12th Annual Business Awards in the Exceptional CSR Practice category, is one of Goducate’s loyal corporate sponsors. Not only does MHC Asia (www.mhcasia.com) contribute generously to Goducate, it loses no opportunity to create awareness of and to gather support from others for Goducate.

At the Open Day of the new premises of the MHC Medical Centre (Amara), guests were encouraged to contribute to Goducate rather than to send flowers. Another form of contribution was for postcards that carried pictures of children at the Goducate children’s home in Cambodia. Guests who contributed in this way were asked to write a message to the child or children whose picture was on the postcard they chose.

The MHC Medical Centre (Amara) is a centre for GP consultations as well as a one-stop health-screening centre for pre-employment checks and executive health screening.

Goducate is grateful to be the beneficiary of MHC Asia’s CSR (corporate social responsibility). Among other things, the company has sponsored office space for Goducate headquarters, several vans for various Goducate projects, the lease of a Goducate center in Batam, land for the Goducate model farm in Laguna, and literacy centres in Sabah.
