Daisy’s Story

Daisy is a grade 3 elementary school student. She is the youngest of three children, and the only one fortunate enough to be still in school. Her parents are both deaf. Her two siblings had to leave elementary school, because they were behind in their studies. They now work in the rice fields. They were supposed to enrol in our Alternative Learning System tutorials this year, but decided to join next year so that they can continue to earn money this year.

Daisy is attending our tutorials because no one at home can help her with her assignments. She is striving hard to learn. She is also getting music tutorials. Recently she proudly shared with music teacher Melissa that she has been asked to join other teenage students to play their recorders at the school Christmas party on Dec 17.

To build up self-confidence and self-esteem is quite hard on Daisy’s part because of her parents’ situation. Thankfully the tutorial programmes are helping her.

In Daisy’s village, Talahiban, we give tutorials twice a week. We do not yet have a building for this learning centre, so the tutorials are conducted in the open air.

The villagers here are very poor. Once a week we give the children some porridge with the tutorial sessions. Melissa herself is still a student who benefitted from our tutorials in another centre. She is now helping to teach music to others. She is very touched by how poor these students are and is saving her own money to buy personal items she knows they need.

Goducate project on backyard farming has started

The Goducate project on backyard farming has started. It is being done in Dayap, in Laguna province. This settlement has been built for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy who lost their homes in Manila in 2009.

The project is being started with two families. Each has a backyard (or rather, a “frontyard”) about 2×3 m in size. It is the mother in the family who is learning how to grow vegetables. Each woman is being guided by the manager of the Goducate model farm.

A motorcycle sponsored by a generous supporter has made it easier for the farm manager to visit these families.

Soon two more families will join the project.

Musically-talented Melissa, an inspiration to many

I met Melissa during last week’s trip with several other Singaporeans to the Goducate Centre in Laguna, Philippines. She looked physically smaller than a normal 14-year-old but she behaved like a mature young lady.

She was playing violin at a special occasion when I saw her. After which she played solo for us. Wow! I was impressed! It was the 1st time I’d heard the violin played in a shabby, muddy, dirty environment. But who needs a concert hall? Melissa’s music was most inspiring and sweet sounding! She learnt how to play the violin in less than 2 years! Now, she plays for private functions, and even helps to train 22 children in music. She also displayed confidence in her conversational and public speaking skills. I was told that Melissa’s life was transformed after she met Goducate Community workers who helped her and her family.

Melissa is one of the beneficiaries from Goducate’s Musical Livelihood Project in Laguna to equip children and teenagers to make some money from performances and potentially gain free entry into High Schools through their musical ability, thus giving them hope. The training of playing a musical instrument also instils discipline and determination, as well as keeping them off the streets and getting into any troubles (drugs, alcohol, prostitution etc). More than a 100 children have been learning to play an instrument.

It was great to see the Goducate-Laguna Orchestra grow in size and strength. More native trainers are now involved, and setting a wonderful and hopeful example to many poor children who thought they would never have a chance to discover their musical talents or opportunities to showcase it.

Whilst there are many needy children and teenagers waiting in line to be trained musically, I hope Goducate supporters will donate more musical instruments to help these needy Asians help themselves.
