Happy Happy English program in Singapore has run for 2 years

The Happy Happy English program that Goducate has been running in dormitories for foreign workers in Singapore has been running for 2 years already. It’s a program to teach the workers functional English. It’s also intended to extend a hand of friendship to these people whose lives here consist largely of extremely long hours of work. Very often the students are just arriving back from work when our classes, held on Saturday nights, are ending at 10 pm.

The program has been running in three dormitories since last year, and in a fourth starting this year. Last week, students in the first three dormitories who had attended at least 60% of the classes this year received their certificates of attendance. This end-of-year event was an informal one held in the various dormitories, with fun and games, chat, and food.

The volunteers have been privileged to be accepted as friends with whom the workers are willing to share their ups and down. Sadly, they have more downs than ups, and one of the worst situations they face is sudden termination of their work projects, and hence their jobs, within months of their arrival, long before they have earned enough to pay for the fees they paid their agents to get a job here.

Goducate hopes that the Happy Happy English program will at least give these workers the idea that there are people here who are prepared to be their friends, and we are thankful that modern technology enables us to keep in touch with them even after they return home.

ConnecTayo kicks off Goducate Cup basketball tournament in Singapore

ConnecTayo, derived from a combination of English and Tagalog words to mean “Let’s Connect”, is a Goducate project to help Filipino immigrants in Singapore.  Towards the end of last year, we conducted a livelihood-training program for them. 22 people completed the course and were certified as basketball referees.

On March 23 this year, ConnecTayo in partnership with FilOrg Singapore, kicked off the Goducate Cup Basketball League, which is being held at Jurong West Secondary School.  21 teams have joined the league. There is a height limit for players of 5’10’’, to keep the teams as balanced as possible and thus to make the games more exciting.  The games are being held every weekend and will run for the next 6 months. Some of those who completed the basketball referee training program last year are officiating at this league.

We thank MHC Asia for being the main sponsor for the event. MHC Asia also provided free medical check-ups for players and team supporters on the opening day.

ConnecTayo programs are intended to enhance Filipino immigrants’ experience of living in Singapore.  We believe that Filipinos who are well connected among themselves will be able to integrate well with the locals and even to contribute to the local community.

Goducate’s first project with migrant workers in Singapore is through basketball

Migrant workers make up a high proportion of the population in Singapore, but it is not easy for them to integrate with the locals. The locals may see them as competitors for jobs, or find the lifestyles and habits of some groups undesirable, or are concerned that the foreigners do not integrate well. Goducate would like to help the migrant workers to integrate with local society and to improve their lot in life. Teaching them English is one way of doing so, and plans are underway to start a pilot class for Chinese and other migrant workers later this month. Another large group of workers comes from the Philippines. A program for this group has already started.

Basketball is undoubtedly the most popular sport among Filipinos wherever they are.  They enjoy just shooting the ball into the hoop alone or with friends, or taking part in an organised basketball league. There are now many Filipino-run basketball leagues in Singapore and the number is expected to rise annually. To meet the need for skilled and certified referees to officiate at basketball tournaments, Goducate, through its “ConnecTayo! Singapore” program, invited George Magsino, a referee certified by FIBA (Federation of International Basketball) and BAP (Basketball Association of the Philippines), to conduct a week-long training course.  It produced 22 certified referees, some at Beginner and some at Intermediate level. The certification offers these new referees the chance of earning some additional income as referees, and because the Intermediate-level certificate is recognized by BAP, it will be recognized by any Filipino community globally, a helpful point for any worker who may go on to work elsewhere.

The program is intended also to benefit the Singapore community because more tournaments will be run professionally, resulting in better controlled games and fewer matches marred by disputes and even fights.  Goducate would like the referees trained under this program to form an association to oversee their own development and skills upgrading, and to promote integration by joining and developing community projects and events.
