How the children at Grace’s Home for Children in Myanmar have progressed

A visit last month to the Goducate-supported Grace’s Home for Children in the outskirts of Yangon, Myanmar, revealed that the children have certainly grown—not only in height but also in capabilities. One of them, Sahe, has taken it upon herself to coach and teach some of the other kids. The atmosphere in the Home is indeed one of a happy family.

The older kids from the Home also help to conduct educational and recreational activities for village children and their mums. The village children look forward to this weekly event, which has become a regular occasion for a village gathering.

As excitement built up at the second village that we visited, the village children themselves volunteered to take over the show, with a song and dance. How the visits by the Home enable hidden talents to be expressed!

Goducate Scholars Become Community Development Trainers in Barangay Balanac

On Feb 7, Goducate in Laguna sealed a partnership with Barangay (village) Balanac in the municipality of Magdalena, for Goducate scholars to be community development trainers there. The village has scarce resources. For instance, it is 10 km away from the nearest public hospital, so the residents seldom seek medical help.

Most of our 23 Goducate scholars in different universities in Laguna are in their third or fourth year of study, and thus are very busy complying with their school requirements. Yet they make time for their community work. Even those scholars who have graduated continue to help out in our community projects.

Some of them teach children aged 4-12 every Saturday. They teach subjects such as good behaviour (through stories) and proper hygiene, as well as musical skills. Some scholars are part of the Health Information Program. They check blood pressures and teach people the causes of hypertension and diabetes, and simple measures of preventing these diseases.

A team of Goducate scholars will now be visiting Barangay Balanac every Saturday. It is our joy to see the scholars appreciate what they have and their willingness to help others.

Goducate Partners Local Social Welfare Department in the Philippines

On December 12 Goducate helped the Philippines Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD), Guimaras Province, with a family program designed to address the needs of fathers in leading the home. 32 fathers enthusiastically committed to build better homes through leading their families responsibly.
This partnership with the DSWD in Guimaras had started earlier, with programs for youth against drug addiction, teenage pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS.

Guimaras is an island province in the Philippines located in the region of Western Visayas. It is situated in the Panay Gulf, between the islands of Panay and Negros.
DSWD approached Goducate for help with running the youth programs and giving the lectures. Goducate produced fun, relevant, and interactive programs to address these issues. It also trained our local partners to facilitate small-group discussions and the games. The youth were informed about the pressing concerns of the topics under discussion, and were also given opportunities to make right decisions for themselves.

Five similar programs were conducted in different areas in Guimaras in the last quarter of 2017, and attended by a total of approximately 500 young people.

Goducate is one with the government in believing that the country will change for the better if families are transformed holistically.
