Official opening of the girls workshop in Goducate Children’s Home Cambodia

Yesterday was the official opening of the girls’ workshop at the Goducate Children’s Home in Prey Nob, Cambodia.  The ceremony was attended by two personnel from Goducate HQ.

Two sewing machines donated by supporters from Singapore have been set up in the sewing room.  Some of the girls will be trained in sewing. In the baking room, the girls had prepared delicious durian cupcakes the night before, and they showed off their decorating skills.

The Home has received orders for cakes from Rawlings Institute, a training school in Cambodia, and the girls will be able to bake regularly and draw a small income from the orders.

Goducate in India prepares teaches ladies how to look after themselves

The Goducate Lifeskills Center in India caters mainly to university students. It aims to prepare these students for the job market, to face the world beyond the university. The Center has just finished a program targeted at the women members. It aimed at teaching women how to look after themselves in this wider world.

The topics covered ranged from simple ways of looking after their health, to how to figure out the signs of a good friend and how to be a good friend, to how to manage conflicts in relationships. Also, at a time when newspapers are rife with the physical dangers that women in India face, one of the topics was self-defence for women. This session offered the women safety tips, taught them some self-defence techniques, and gave them a resource list for developing a personal safety plan.

Every session was dealt very practically, with games and live examples. It was good to see the ladies enjoy themselves and become more confident mentally.

Organizing this course is one means by which Goducate achieves its aim of helping Asians help themselves.

At the moment, the trainer is provided by our training-school partner. However, we are working towards being recognized by TESDA as a training school.
