Goducate starts Happy Happy English in second dorm in Singapore

In January, Goducate started a programme called Happy Happy English for foreign workers living in a huge dormitory Tuas, in the far west of Singapore (see Jan 24 and May 7 blogs). Goducate has now started a similar programme in another dormitory in Jurong East, in the western part of Singapore.

The Happy Happy English programme consists of a few weeks of “edutainment”, which takes the form of an entertaining video about certain aspects of Singapore, combined with a stage show, games, and the learning of some English phrases. Before the 12-week course starts, there is a session for placement tests for those who want to join the classes. The lessons are very interactive, with facilitators on hand to lead in small-group activities and chats.

The residents in the second dorm have generally been in Singapore longer than those in the first dorm, and the level of English is on the whole higher among those who have registered for classes. The lesson plan for the 2 higher-level classes will consist of watching a video first before the students break up into groups to discuss the video.

The aim of a Happy Happy English is to give the foreign workers confidence in speaking functional English and to make them feel welcome in Singapore.

Goducate Literacy Centers in Laguna celebrate 4th “graduation” day

On March 13 the Goducate Literacy Centers in Laguna, the Philippines, held their 4th “graduation” day for the 49 students who completed a year’s attendance at a center.

The program was held at the Goducate Training Center in Laguna, and was planned to build up relations with the parents and the community as well as to acknowledge the accomplishments of the students and the children, and the contributions of the teachers and the volunteer mothers.

The program ended with an inspirational message given by Mrs Linda Cristiian, one of the volunteer mothers. Her message was about the importance of education. A special point she made was that poverty need not be a hindrance to obtaining an education.

Goducate helps set up first strawberry production in Iloilo, Philippines

About 15 kilometers away from the Goducate Training Center (GTC) in San Miguel, Iloilo, is a place called “seven cities”, a monicker for seven villages in the highlands of Alimodian, Iloilo.  The area used to be a hotbed of insurgency, but thanks to farmers like Antonio, who has a passion to help his own people, his village has attained considerable peace and order.

Antonio visited GTC a year ago and was impressed by the vegetable production models he saw.  It sparked his interest in growing high-value vegetables in his own village, where the temperatures often dips to as low as 18 degrees Celsius at night. After visiting his small farm, I advised him to concentrate on organic strawberry production since he has practically no competitors in the whole of Western Visayas.  Strawberries requires warm daytime temperatures and cool nights to induce flowering, and his village has just the right conditions.

Starting with only 5 tissue-cultured plantlets that Goducate provided, Antonio was able to produce sufficient runners for container gardening and for field production.   He uses plant concoctions—made from fermented fruit and fermented plant juices—as fertilizer, fungicide, and insecticide to ensure organic produce, a technology he learned from Goducate.

Antonio is the first to grow strawberries in Iloilo, Philippines.  As token of his appreciation to Goducate for the technical assistance he received, Antonio has offered GTC to be the exclusive outlet for his strawberry harvests.  Once his plant nursery has enough propagated runners, he plans to help other local farmers to engage in strawberry production as a means of livelihood or as a means of supplementary income.
