Goducate Training Center in Iloilo runs staff-enhancement program

Although the main function of the Goducate Training Center (GTC) in Iloilo is to train people to be community development workers, in the pursuit for excellence its staff and volunteers need to be continually learning new things. The topics for the staff-enhancement session held last month were intended to groom staff to run leadership and other programs, and to deal with the public.

The session was attended by staff, volunteers, and trainees. A seminar on proper decorum, grooming and hygiene was held in the morning, and a workshop on public speaking followed in the afternoon.

The proper decorum, grooming and hygiene seminar was designed to teach the participants how to be good stewards of their bodies, how to properly conduct oneself in public and how to look pleasing and appropriate for the occasion. The interactive seminar culminated with a challenge to each team to do a makeover and to dress up their chosen representatives.

The public-speaking workshop aimed to equip the participants to be good speakers and to increase their confidence in speaking to the public. The guest speaker gave an enriching and dynamic lecture. The activity ended with teams practising the essentials of public speaking with their group mates.

Goducate Training Center, Iloilo, hosts Congressional District Sports Association Meet

The Goducate Training Center (GTC) in Iloilo, Philippines, together with the municipality of San Miguel, hosted the badminton tournament of the 2nd Congressional District Sports Association (CDSA) Meet 2015 last month. It was the first time that GTC has hosted the event.

Eight municipalities from Iloilo province and the host municipality of San Miguel participated in this Department of Education sponsored sports league. The aim of the CDSA sports and cultural competitions is to uncover talents, skills, and potentials of elementary and secondary school students. These competitions are also intended to foster the true spirit of sportsmanship and unity among the participants.

GTC’s multipurpose sports hall accommodated some 300 individuals, from the organizers, athletes, coaches, teachers to parents and supporters, during those two days. This hall is much used throughout the year for various sports activities, such as badminton, volleyball, basketball and many others, as part of GTC’s community work to train youth in qualities such as discipline, sportsmanship, team work, and leadership. Thus hosting the CDSA meet was very much in keeping with GTC’s community work.

Goducate volunteers in Laguna, Philippines, undergo search-and-rescue training

The Philippines is a typhoon-prone country. Around 19 tropical cyclones or storms enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (for tropical cyclone warnings) in a typical year, and of these usually 6 to 9 make landfall, which cause the country a loss of billions of pesos in damage to the economy and to physical structures. Worst of all is the loss of many lives.

For these reasons the Laguna Provincial Public Safety Company (LPPSC, the part of the Laguna Police Provincial Office that sees to internal security operations), conducts Search and Rescue (SAR) training. 6 of our Goducate volunteer workers attended the training held on Sept 3-5 and are now deemed qualified to answer the call of duty if necessary. One of these volunteers is Jelmar Lobusto, who, with Goducate’s help, passed the Alternative Learning System exam this year (see Aug 21, 2015 blog), which made him eligible for the SAR training.

The SAR training taught (1)Proper application of bandages on different parts of the body, (2) Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, (3) Quick response and communication, and (4) How to effectively pass information in the community.

The training also raised awareness about being prepared for the earthquake of magnitude 7.2 that is expected by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology to hit Manila and its surrounds (including Laguna) within our lifetimes (http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/316877/scitech/science/the-next-big-quake-in-metro-manila-may-hit-within-our-lifetime)

After that training session, the LPPSC’s Provincial Advisory Council ( PAC), on which sits a Goducate representative, decided to raise funds to purchase some of the most basic needs for an immediate response, such as life jackets and chainsaws. Thus the Council held a Dinner for a Cause, and Goducate helped to sell 150 tickets at PhP500 each for the event held on Nov 7, which raised PhP 75,000. A similar dinner may be held in Feb 2016.
