Happy Happy English program in Singapore has run for 2 years

The Happy Happy English program that Goducate has been running in dormitories for foreign workers in Singapore has been running for 2 years already. It’s a program to teach the workers functional English. It’s also intended to extend a hand of friendship to these people whose lives here consist largely of extremely long hours of work. Very often the students are just arriving back from work when our classes, held on Saturday nights, are ending at 10 pm.

The program has been running in three dormitories since last year, and in a fourth starting this year. Last week, students in the first three dormitories who had attended at least 60% of the classes this year received their certificates of attendance. This end-of-year event was an informal one held in the various dormitories, with fun and games, chat, and food.

The volunteers have been privileged to be accepted as friends with whom the workers are willing to share their ups and down. Sadly, they have more downs than ups, and one of the worst situations they face is sudden termination of their work projects, and hence their jobs, within months of their arrival, long before they have earned enough to pay for the fees they paid their agents to get a job here.

Goducate hopes that the Happy Happy English program will at least give these workers the idea that there are people here who are prepared to be their friends, and we are thankful that modern technology enables us to keep in touch with them even after they return home.

Goducate musicians give their high school a pleasant surprise

On Nov 6, 2015, when the Masaya National High School celebrated their 2nd assembly, Card Giving and Oath-taking ceremony for the officers of their Parents and Teachers Association, Goducate musicians were invited to play for the event. The school had known of the Goducate music program since 2011, when some of their students then were part of the program. But the school had a pleasant surprise when they found out that 4 of the 6 musicians who turned up for the event were current students at the school. The other 2 were alumni of the school.

The four current students were Ericka Laus and Loween Ricafort, both grade 7 students at the school and Blessina Suncaya and Sonny Boy Espanola both grade 8 students, and all were violinists. The other two, Manuel Factor and Rea Cabalfin, are volunteer workers at Goducate Laguna, who were glad to be able to show their gratitude to their alma mater by playing for the event.

The principal and teachers were very pleased with their students’ musical performance and look forward to more performances by Goducate musicians. Goducate hopes that our musicians’ love for music and dedication to learning to play an instrument will be an inspiration to others.

Goducate scholars in Laguna help with medical mission

On Oct 26, Goducate Laguna, together with a partner group, held a medical mission at the Goducate Training Center in Laguna. The partner group provided the medical team of 5 doctors, 2 nurses, and 8 medical assistants. Goducate Laguna staff, Goducate scholars, and members of the Provincial Police Department helped the medical team serve the 206 people who turned up for medical help.

Goducate scholars are college students from the Goducate music program who get financial help from Goducate for their studies because they come from very-low-income families. They actively help in Goducate’s community work, which they find meaningful, and which we hope will inculcate in them the desire to continue to serve the needy. In the medical area, they have helped with previous medical missions, and also visit hospitals to bring cheer to inpatients.

For this 5-hour event, 2 were assigned to the vital-signs section, 5 to the counselling area, 5 to the medical consultation area, 5 to the eye clinic, and 5 to the pharmacy. The others served as general helpers.
